When the police arrive, Luke is still on the floor in the bedroom. Heâs covered in Kevin Davidsonâs blood as well as his own.
Heâd tried to revive the man, even though he knew it was hopeless.
Even though he wasnât sure Kevin should get the chance to live.
The paramedics check Luke over and when itâs established that thereâs nothing wrong with him bar a broken nose and some bruises, a black policeman comes to sit with him.
Heâs not much older than Luke and heâs wearing a sharp suit. He has a comforting presence. Kind. Friendly.
In the next room, he can hear Rose sobbing and speaking to another policeman.
Kevin is still lying on the floor, as Luke sits on the bed.
âI did it,â Rose is saying, over and over. âIt was me. I shot him.â
The detective looks at Luke.
âMy name is Inspector Alleyne,â the policeman says.
âLuke Miller,â Luke replies.
âMr Miller, you want to tell me your version of what happened here tonight? Weâve heard your wifeâs.â
âThat man broke in. He was attacking my wife. He came for me and I â I shot him.â
âYour wife is insisting that she shot him.â
Inspector Alleyne looks down at the gun on the floor. Luke looks at it, too, and snorts.
âMy wife didnât shoot him,â he says.
âShe wants to protect you.â
âI know. I was trying to protect her.â
âDo you know this man?â
âYes. His name is Kevin Davidson. Heâs my wifeâs ex. He was violent to her before and he followed us here.â
Luke looks at the dead man. In the overhead lights of the villaâs bedroom, he looks so harmless. Dark hair, a little younger than Luke, a weathered face. His features are contorted in death but Luke can still see he was attractive, once.
Inspector Alleyne frowns.
âMr Miller, where did you get the gun? You are not licensed, as a foreign citizen, to carry a weapon on our island and you certainly did not bring it through the airport.â
âI canât say where I got the gun.â
The policeman cocks his head.
âYou will, eventually,â he says. âBut the more pressing matter is that you have a gun. You procured one, while on Saint-Thérèse. For what reason?â
Luke stares at Kevinâs body.
âTo protect us. I didnât know I would have to use it. I didnât want to.â
Inspector Alleyne sighs.
âYou killed him with one shot. Unlucky, or did you know what you were doing?â
âI know how to handle a gun but I wasnât aiming to kill him. We were fighting. I just fired. The first chamber was empty and I panicked. I didnât even realise I hadnât loaded it properly. But I was anxious all evening. We knew Davidson had come to the island. I was terrified heâd turn up.â
âI do not know what the law is in Britain,â Inspector Alleyne says. âYou may not know what the law is regarding this sort of incident either. You are probably familiar with the law in the US, because you have seen it on television. In America, youâre allowed to protect yourself on your property.
