When the police arrive, Luke is still on the floor in the bedroom. He’s covered in Kevin Davidson’s blood as well as his own.

He’d tried to revive the man, even though he knew it was hopeless.

Even though he wasn’t sure Kevin should get the chance to live.

The paramedics check Luke over and when it’s established that there’s nothing wrong with him bar a broken nose and some bruises, a black policeman comes to sit with him.

He’s not much older than Luke and he’s wearing a sharp suit. He has a comforting presence. Kind. Friendly.

In the next room, he can hear Rose sobbing and speaking to another policeman.

Kevin is still lying on the floor, as Luke sits on the bed.

‘I did it,’ Rose is saying, over and over. ‘It was me. I shot him.’

The detective looks at Luke.

‘My name is Inspector Alleyne,’ the policeman says.

‘Luke Miller,’ Luke replies.

‘Mr Miller, you want to tell me your version of what happened here tonight? We’ve heard your wife’s.’

‘That man broke in. He was attacking my wife. He came for me and I – I shot him.’

‘Your wife is insisting that she shot him.’

Inspector Alleyne looks down at the gun on the floor. Luke looks at it, too, and snorts.

‘My wife didn’t shoot him,’ he says.

‘She wants to protect you.’

‘I know. I was trying to protect her.’

‘Do you know this man?’

‘Yes. His name is Kevin Davidson. He’s my wife’s ex. He was violent to her before and he followed us here.’

Luke looks at the dead man. In the overhead lights of the villa’s bedroom, he looks so harmless. Dark hair, a little younger than Luke, a weathered face. His features are contorted in death but Luke can still see he was attractive, once.

Inspector Alleyne frowns.

‘Mr Miller, where did you get the gun? You are not licensed, as a foreign citizen, to carry a weapon on our island and you certainly did not bring it through the airport.’

‘I can’t say where I got the gun.’

The policeman cocks his head.

‘You will, eventually,’ he says. ‘But the more pressing matter is that you have a gun. You procured one, while on Saint-Thérèse. For what reason?’

Luke stares at Kevin’s body.

‘To protect us. I didn’t know I would have to use it. I didn’t want to.’

Inspector Alleyne sighs.

‘You killed him with one shot. Unlucky, or did you know what you were doing?’

‘I know how to handle a gun but I wasn’t aiming to kill him. We were fighting. I just fired. The first chamber was empty and I panicked. I didn’t even realise I hadn’t loaded it properly. But I was anxious all evening. We knew Davidson had come to the island. I was terrified he’d turn up.’

‘I do not know what the law is in Britain,’ Inspector Alleyne says. ‘You may not know what the law is regarding this sort of incident either. You are probably familiar with the law in the US, because you have seen it on television. In America, you’re allowed to protect yourself on your property.
